Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
Chronic Kidney Disease is a long-term condition where the kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter waste and excess fluids from the blood. Early detection and management can slow disease progression and improve quality of life.
What is CKD?
CKD refers to the gradual decline of kidney function over time. It can progress silently, often without noticeable symptoms in early stages.
Causes of CKD
Common causes include diabetes, high blood pressure, glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, and prolonged use of certain medications.
Symptoms of CKD
- Symptoms may include fatigue, swelling in the legs and ankles, frequent urination, poor appetite, and high blood pressure. Early stages may have no symptoms.
- Fatigue & Weakness: Reduced kidney function causes toxins to build up in the body, leading to persistent tiredness, weakness, and low energy.
- Swelling (Edema): The kidneys cannot remove excess fluid properly, resulting in swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, or around the eyes.
- Changes in Urination: CKD may cause increased or decreased urination, foamy urine, or the presence of blood in urine.
- Loss of Appetite & Nausea: Waste accumulation can trigger poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, and general digestive discomfort.
Stages of CKD
- CKD is classified into five stages based on kidney function. Early detection helps prevent progression to kidney failure.
